Are Mongolians fashionable?

One would think that citizens of a landlocked country with little access to basic items such as wheat would be similarly confined when it comes to fashion. Not so. Mongolians are incredibly fashionable.

I don't mean that Mongolians are wearing knee length shorts, or whatever is trendy in New York right now, but they are very conscious of how they look. UB has a large young population, as anyone who can comes into the city for university, and young people are likely to stay after they finish school. What this means is that you have a huge number of men and women in their late teens, early 20s who are unmarried and have disposable incomes.

The girls tend to wear outfits that people in the US might wear to go out on the weekends, or on special occasions. Women wear high heels almost all the time, and glittery tops are popular, as are short skirts. Men tend to wear button-down shirts and to have a generally sartorial look about them.

Cell phones are the key accessory for any outfit. I bought a used cell phone upon arriving in Mongolia for around $30. It's one of the original Nokia pre-flip phones that everyone used to have, six years ago. It works fine, all the controls are in English, and it gets good reception. Mongolians, however, practically pity me for having such an old phone. People here tend to buy new cell phones about once every six months, and they spend huge amounts of money: many cell phones here cost around $300 -- that's 25% of the average Mongolian's salary. On some level, I'm embarrassed for having such an ugly phone, and I want to say to people "I have a razr at home in New York, I swear!" but, at the same time, being a foreigner here I feel somewhat immune to social mores.

My boss recently, who is in her late 30s, was talking to me about the obsession with clothes and phones here in Mongolia. She was saying that Mongolians by nature are adaptive people; they are nomadic and used to change. They can adopt other cultures very quickly, almost unconsciously. She worries though that the adoption of style and image is occurring on a very superficial level. "I keep thinking they are going to wake up one day," she says, "and realize that they have no sense of who they really are." But then again, she says, maybe they won't. Either way, for now, they look great.

It dont hurt to be trendy as long as we spend your money, man! Plus accept the fact that most people who has a nice look have a better job and salary. Because people who care about themselves care every single angle of life and what they do and it make them more succesful than you. So first impression starts with appearance.

hey Ariel!
Yeah, we Mongolians have such a good taste of fashion.
I agree with ya somehow. Ppl should make money before they spend.

But Mongolia have different levels of ppl as any country.
If you open your eyes you'll see that gap.

Some ppl have good life to spend money for their living expenses.
And they do have their own image even. They have tallent and they really enjoy their life style you know.
So why we should care about that poor ppl hu? it's their own responsibility. well,we car and we working for mongolian development.

But why I can't wear what I like just because I live in less developed country?
By the way, fashion is not only shorts which is fachionable today in New York or Paris. If you think so you are pathetic slowcoach!

Hi everyone!
Why is all people getting so serious about Ariel's comment?I
am Mongolian girl and i know how is life over here..
It is a freedom who can write their thoughts or opinions...
Dont be so vulnerable to someone's critisicm.
Also, if you can't write in English properly and grammaticly please just write it in your own language, atleast people can understand what you trying to say to the readers.
Ariel, you should learn Great Mongolian language too if you married one of our girls...
Anyway , be optimistic...

Alexa & Arial

Many tend to look down on Mongolians, but why? Some people only spent a year in Mongolia and they think, they know so much about the country. Those people usually deliver wrong message/information about our country to those who have never been to or read about the country. Those people should acknowledge that you have a limited knowledge or experience about our country and try not to deliver false impression of Mongolia. Some articles really make me want to meet the author and share a piece of my mind – The original post by Alexa stated that “The girls tend to wear outfits that people in the US might wear to go out on the weekends, or on special occasions. Women wear high heels almost all the time, and glittery tops are popular, as are short skirts. Men tend to wear button-down shirts and to have a generally sartorial look about them.” Most Americans don’t have sense of fashion, don’t you think it is little unrealistic for you to compare Mongolians with Americans. So, what! Most Mongolians dress better than most Americans daily…you have a problem because????? From your article I see judgment and criticism. You also said, “Mongolians are incredibly fashionable. I don't mean that Mongolians are wearing knee length shorts, or whatever is trendy in New York right now, but they are very conscious of how they look.” Interesting….well I know many, actually so many people in Mongolia who wear knee length shorts, or whatever is trendy in almighty the Big Apple…OHHH Come on!!!! NY & UB, been there, seen them ….I

NO offense…this is my opinion towards yours.

Oh. It is really true about Mongolians' dressing. They are too fashionable. Actually it is not important what people are wearing. But those young people don't consider that. They are like born for fancy clothes. I remember that my friend's sister who was from Zawhkan to UB to go to school said my friend, "People would not know what you ate home, but they would see what you are wearing when you are in sight of them." They both from Zawhkan and my friend was extremely fashionable girl. I think that is stupid when you have poor choice of food home, you wear as elegant as Hollywood star.

Well, the experience is always limited to previous experiences, and a limit always creates next problems that should be solved based on previous and actual experiences. Some might judge what they have seen or experienced in Mongolia, also some others might be arguing what they want to see or experiencing. Actually majority of us poor, and it is obvious that cost of Clothings is comparitevaly high vs. Food in Mongolia. I cannot see any logical link to comment on expensive Cellphones as well as fake fashion brands available in Mongolia. However, there are around 1.2 mln cellphone users throughout Mongolia. An efficient communication was played vital role in the history once. Probably, we are still considering about the importance of being informed and conscious about the happenings around of us. Finally, I was been disputed hard with one of my friend about that there are only few hookers in Mongolia actually, as like any other country around the world. He had opposite position. I was said: If you say to me that all Mongolian girls are whores then with whom are marrying our younger brothers? Guess what his answer...was.

i just love the argument of both sides.
Ariel, i argee with some of his statement
And of course i agree with my people, too.
Ariel, i saw your side, but i dont believe that you saw the mongolian side. Even thought i havent been in my country for 7 years, i still notice a lot changes. But teenagers are teenagers. u know what i mean? There are a lot teenagers in America just like in Mongolia. i know that Mongolia spend a lot money on clothes, but here in America, most of them are middle class. And Otgontuul, i agree with your hahuul and all that, people in Mongolia wants to be more better than anyone, but hey everyone in this world just want to be better than anyone right? but i believe that Mongolia have gone too much on hahuul. but i am on both side.
